Fixed Braces

Fixed Braces
Fixed braces consist of several metal plates (Brackets) which are connected by an elastic, flexible wire called the arch wire. The arch wire is connected to the brackets using small elastic rings.
As shown in the images there are conventual metal brackets brackets (left) and ceramic brackets (middle) which can present an alternative to lingual treatment. For special tastes, golden brackets are also available (right). Fixed braces are used in orthodontics to treat all age brackets, children, adolescents and adults.

Apart from the variety of appearance there is one major advantage of metal brackets worth mentioning which applies for both conventional as well as lingual appliances. Preferably, we use so called “self-ligating” metal brackets, which use a metal clip in stead of elastic rings to secure the archwire. This makes the whole system more flexible which, in turn, results in a more gradual transfer of small portions of force from the arch wire to the teeth. Small forces are more easily translated into movement which results in a shorter treatment time and increased patient comfort.
